The Skills Centre staff is committed to the community and its environment. We feel compelled to make a difference where we can and that is why every year on the last Sunday in September, we organize BC Rivers Day for our community and surrounding communities.
BC Rivers Day is a province wide event which gives the public an opportunity to celebrate its spectacular river heritage. BC Rivers Day seeks to raise public understanding of rivers and the many benefits they provide us: clean water, spawning salmon, historic trade and exploration routes, and a place to play.
There is much to celebrate, but BC Rivers Day also profiles the threats to our waterways, and offers the public a chance to get directly involved with creating solutions. In the past BC Rivers Day was celebrated as a free event at Gyro Park with kayaking, a kids’ zone, sand castle building, and exhibits. Two years ago, Rivers Day took a different format. The Skills Centre organized a river clean-up and community involvement grew from a crew of 30 people in 2008 to over 100 last year.
We will be organizing teams to clean-up the river again this year and offering prizes for such things as team spirit and the most unique debris found. So please contact us to get involved and sign your team up today.
