Rivers Day
The Skills Centre staff is committed to the community and its environment. We feel compelled to make a difference where we can and that is why every year on the last Sunday in September, we organize BC River’s Day for our community and surrounding communities.
BC River’s Day is a province wide event which gives the public an opportunity to celebrate its spectacular river heritage. BC River’s Day seeks to raise public understanding of rivers and the many benefits they provide us; clean water, spawning salmon, historic trade and exploration routes, and a place to play.
There is much to celebrate, but BC Rivers Day also profiles the threats to our waterways, and offers the public a chance to get directly involved with creating solutions. In the past BC Rivers Day was celebrated as a free event at Gyro Park with kayaking, a kid’s zone, sand castle building, and exhibits. However, for the past few years Rivers Day has taken a different format. As has been for the past three years the Skills Centre will once again organize a river clean-up. A couple of the highlights from last year include:
- first year of the River clean-up saw 30 volunteers participate (basically our staff!) last year 120 volunteers showed up
- 17,477 lbs of debris being removed from a 1.5 kilometer area of the Columbia River
We will be organizing teams (or put together your own) for the clean-up and offering prizes for such things as the most unique, the largest and the largest volume of debris found. So please contact us to get involved and sign your team up today.

Tip of the Day
Don’t ever expect anyone to 100 percent commit themselves to supporting a project, a direction or a practice unless they had input into creating it.
